Week of Oct. 23rd
What a beautiful week of weather. Leaves are finally changing color but you wouldn't think we were in late October with the temperatures this week. The grounds team had a very busy week, still dealing with grass growing, leaves falling and completing some fall projects.
On Monday and Tuesday the team completed a deep verti-cut on fairways. This is a major process to complete in two days with all hands on deck. This process starts with running the verti-cut unit across the fairways to remove thatch and organic matter. After the verti-cut we then blow all the debris off the fairways into the rough where we then clean the debris with our Turf Tidy vacuum. Once the fairways are clean the last step in the process is to dry cut the fairways clipping off the grass that is standing up.
Also during the first part of the week the team continued our fall and winter herbicide applications in the new native areas with another round of a pre-emergent herbicide followed by a heavy watering. Remember there are no sprinklers in these areas so all water must be completed by hand or with the use of hoses and portable sprinklers.
With the cold mornings putting a hurting on our flowers and the forecast of frost next week the team removed all annuals around the property this week.
Another fall item that the team completed this week was composting all the rough around the property. This also is a process with all hands on deck. We use our two top-dressers to compost larger areas but around the greens and bunkers most of the composting is completed by hand using shovels. Once the composting is complete we drag all the rough to incorporate the compost.
Lastly, the team will be spending the remainder of the week mowing all playing surfaces and completing our weekly task to get ready for what looks like an amazing weekend for golf.
