Week of March 18th
Wow, what a difference a week makes. 70 last week with a beautiful weekend to cold, windy and even some snow showers this week. The team didn't miss a beat switching from spring weather back to winter weather. The main focus for the crew this week was prepping for another truckload of sod finishing up some winter projects.
We were able to sneak in our second application for Poa-Annua seed head control on greens this week. Our fairways were also due for their second application but the wind this week prevented us from completing this task. We hope to finish the fairway application at the beginning of next week.
The team was able to sod all winter tee areas this week. This is a very detail orientated task trying to match up the sodded area to the existing tee, but the crew (to no surprise) crushed it.
One area of focus this week was the walk-on/walk-off area of the 1st green. This area sees some of the most traffic and the bunkers don't help by funneling all traffic in one area. Before sod the team stripped this area, ran both a tractor tiller and hand tiller over the area in 5 different directions and applied soil amendment before re-sodding the entire area.
Here the team is prepping for sod on hole 2, the last irrigation expansion to be sodded. We still have some work to do behind the 3rd green adding soil, smoothing out this area from tree roots and then seeding, which we hope to have completed next week.
We needed to fire up the irrigation system last week to water sod and we had our first irrigation leak of the season this week. The team was happy to take a break from prepping sod.
Another area of focus this week was around the pump house on hole 6. This area was in bad shape from all the tree roots and bad grading. The team removed all the grass and roots, reshaped the area for cart safety and was able to sod this area on Thursday.
Lastly, for the remainder of the week the team will be cleaning the course from all the wind and getting ready for our opening day tournament.
