Week of July 22nd

No upper 90's this week.  The temperatures were down this week but the increased humidity still made the afternoons sticky.  The team had a great week accomplishing all weekly tasks and catching up on some details.      After the much needed rain Monday afternoon the crew put the hoses away and switched gears to some detail work.  The team edged back fairway bunker edges and cleaned the creeks.   The team found some time this week to work on our Bermuda-Grass hitting area.  They top-dressed, punched and verti-cut the top-dressing in to help out with compaction and texture.  We also worked on some of our newer tees with a heavy top-dressing to minimize mower damage.   We were also able to get one of our interns in the shop this week.  To the right is Will who is completing his first-year internship this summer.  Will spent time with Fernando learning the importance of daily mower checks and the ins and outs of reel adjustments.   We did have some surprises this week.   It has been a while since the last blog post but, as you can imagine, the maintenance team has been fighting through this crazy weather stretch.  This has been some of the toughest weather I can remember.  Abnormally hot, combined with very little rain, winds and very low humidity has made the last 4 weeks a tough fight.     The pictures above pretty much sum up what every day has been like for the maintenance team.  BWI Airport is always a little hotter than at the club, but just to use them as a comparison - through this Wednesday BWI has recorded 28 days above 90 degrees and 5 days above 100 degrees.  That is well above average as the normal peak summer average for our area is 88 degrees.    The team has been doing an amazing job keeping in-play areas hydrated by hand watering.  Our older/poorly designed irrigation system has made this a daily task.   The rough and the out-of-play areas have taken it on the chin, where there is very little or no irrigation coverage at all.    Even
