Week of June 20th

What a great week at the Road.  For the last full week in June the course is really coming together.  We had some challenges this week but as always the crew did an amazing job.

Now that the schoolyear has ended, all of our summer crew members have arrived.  It has been a struggle the last couple years finding summer help but this year has been different, with the addition of 5 new summer crew members.  We started off this week in training mode - training the new crew on mowing and getting around the property.  We have been blown away by how quickly these guys have picked up mowing, bunkers and detail work.

Beginning last weekend the weather has been really dry up until Wednesday's rain.  For the first part of the week we focused on water.  We use moisture meters on greens, tees and fairways every morning to ensure these areas are hydrated enough to get through the dry periods.

This week our ageing irrigation showed its ugly face.  We had 5 pipe breaks this week and irrigation wire that failed underneath the asphalt at the maintenance shop.  We are getting lots of practice fixing irrigation this year.

The new native areas we have established over the past 2 years for the most part are looking amazing.  We are struggling with the area to the left of 7 fairway.  This area historically has been one of the wettest areas on the entire property.  Currently we are planning and trying to figure out a way to get this area looking like the rest of the native areas.  We feel like we have a good plan in place and will start working on this area over the next 2 months.  Further details to come.

On Wednesday night we received a little over 1 inch of rain and it continued through most of the day on Thursday.  While the course was extremely wet the crew took advantage of the weather and put some much needed time into the maintenance shop area.  It was nice to have the time to organize and clean up the shop after all the course improvements.

Lastly, we wanted to remind everyone about the 90 Degree Rule we have in place on the Front 9 when weather permits.  The above picture shows what the 90 Degree Rule looks like.  The picture below the 90 Degree Rule sign is what not to do.  As you can see from the picture of the cart path on the 6th tee there is a lot of cart traffic driving straight down the rough from the tee.  This is added wear on areas that do not have irrigation.  Please stay on the cart path and enter the fairway 90 degrees from where your tee shot lands.  Play your shot and return to the cart path.
