Week of March 27th

The team had another great week.  They had to battle some rain and frost but had a very productive week.  The course is really starting to take shape for the last full week of March.   The main focus this week was finishing fairway aeration.  We headed into the week with 7 fairways remaining and the crew crushed it finishing the fairways by Wednesday.   Also during the beginning of the week we were able to get a clean cut on greens without picking up any sand.  We are now down to in-season heights on greens and will start working on the texture of the greens next week.   On Thursday we completed a dry mow and blow on fairways to help clean up any remaining debris from fairway aeration.   After the dry mow and blow we were able to get our last poa seed-head suppression spray done on all fairways.   We had to start cutting rough this week.  With the warmer weather the rough is starting to grow a little earlier this year.  I believe this is the earliest we have had to start mowing rough

What a great weather week.  This week had a touch of spring with temperatures in the 60's and we even reached 77 on Thursday.  The maintenance team had a great week wrapping up some projects and starting new ones.   On Monday we fired up the irrigation system and started our spring audit.  With the predicted temperatures in the 60's and 70's we started watering greens to work sand in from the drill and fill process.  The rain that is coming at the end of this week should help knock the rest of the sand in so we can start working on good quality mows and working on texture for this spring.   On Tuesday the team knocked out another truck load of sod.  This will be the last 20,000 sq.ft. of rough sod for this season wrapping up all the areas around the course.  The team laid 18 pallets on Tuesday, sodding the clubhouse areas and dew walks through the new native areas and the remaining 2 pallets of sod will be used where needed. Also this week we completed another round of pu

Winter made a little return for most of this week.  Flip-flopping weather is common this time of year which can make planning tough.  Despite the cold temperatures and extreme winds, the crew had a great week. Battling wind chills in the teens, the crew's main focus at the beginning of the week was preparing the front of the clubhouse for new sod and plantings.  They first removed all the stumps from the trees that were removed.  Then removed all the old turf and laid out the new flower bed edges.  Once the flower beds were laid out the crew marked the areas for the new trees and incorporated fresh topsoil in all turf areas.  The sod will be coming next week to finish areas around the course and in front of the clubhouse.  New plantings should arrive the first week of April.   The team also created new paver areas around the course for trash cans and water coolers.  We hope to have the trash cans out next week and the water coolers out once the temperatures stay above freezing. It was nice to finally have a dry week.  Cold mornings and nice afternoons was the story this week.  After Drill and Fill last week the crew didn't miss a beat and had a very productive week.   The crew started off the week removing the evergreens at the clubhouse.  These evergreens were overgrown, thinning out and some were dead.  This is the last of the tree removal near the clubhouse to get ready for the new plantings.   The rain late last week helped to beat some of the sand into the greens canopy but we still had some touch up work to do this week.  The crew completed another round of brushing, blowing and rolling at the beginning of this week.  I am very happy with the final results.   During the frosty mornings the team continued working on new course accessories.  With the warmer weather this winter we haven't had many inside days, so refurbishing and creating new accessories has taken longer this year.  We hope to have everything ready to go out on the course by the be

What a week.  After rescheduling 3 times this winter we were finally able to complete the Drill and Fill process on our greens.  We did not have the best conditions this week for this process but with the help from the Drill and Fill contractor and our amazing (now exhausted) crew, we fought through the rain and mist to get it done.  As you can see from the picture above it was all hands on deck.   The first step in this process is using the the Drill and Fill machines to drill 14 inches deep to remove the soil and fill the hole with sand.  The only way to keep the machines moving is to have our crew fill the hoppers with dry sand using 5 gallon buckets.  Appling over 60 tons of sand on the greens you can imagine how many 5 gallon buckets it takes.  After the Drill and Fill machines are done on a green we used our Procore 648 to punch 1/2" holes to create more room for the extra sand left behind.   Above is what the greens looked like after the first 2 steps.   Here is a short vid
