Week of April 24th

What a week.  The weather was all over the place this week.  Chilly with 2 mornings of frost, some beautiful afternoons, a little rain on Thursday morning, the potential of big rains at the end of the week and the weekend.  The crew was crazy busy this week but (no surprise) they killed it.   The team started off the week brushing and cutting greens continuing to work on texture.  We use the more aggressive brushes on our new rollers to stand up the grass followed by a mow.  You can really see in the above picture the brushes standing up the grass on the right side and the left side is after the mow.   After brush cutting on greens was complete, we worked on the texture of our tees and approaches.  The team top-dressed all approaches and tees followed by verti-cutting the top-dressing in.  This will help with firmness and smoothness as well as texture.   You will notice the rope and stakes on the first tee.  We were having some issues with standing water near the 1st tee after rain e

What a roller-coaster ride this weather has been lately.  Record high temps and we had some frosty mornings.  The course is really starting to shape up for the spring.  The crew had another great week.   The team started off the week wrapping up creating new planting beds at the pool and finished painting the shop.  The new clubhouse plantings are complete and we are just waiting for the annual flowers to come which will be the first week of May.   We continued working on texture the first part of this week brush cutting greens.  We will be brush cutting every week during the spring.  Brush cutting helps stand the grass up to get a better quality of cut.  We will only brush cut during the beginning of the weeks so green speeds will be better for the weekends.  Standing the grass up does slow the greens down a bit.   This week we completed our spring pre- and post-emergent herbicide applications in all native areas.  The warm winter has put the new native areas behind but we started t

No winter, now no spring... This week we saw very hot weather for this early in the season. We jumped right into summer.  With the unexpected warm weather we had to change gears.  The team didn't miss a beat and had a great week.   We started off the week applying our first round of pre-emergent herbicides on greens, tees and fairways.  This is about a week or so earlier than we have done in the past due to the warmer weather.   We started an irrigation audit this week checking sprinkler head function.  We found a couple issues that the team addressed.  Knock on wood, with the 2 new pumps and electrical components we have not had any pipe issues so far this year.   Our tree contractor was out this week working on hole 6 and the nursery area.  After 4 days of work we have completed hole 6 with only 1 tree left to remove by 6 green.  This is a massive tree that our contractor will need to tackle from both inside and outside the fence.  We are waiting for the permit to close down Ro

What a great week.  I know I always say it, but this crew continues to do an amazing job - day in and day out.  This week we focused on continuing to wrap up projects and even started some new ones.   The team started off the week spreading mulch around the club.  80 yards of mulch was placed and spread in just one day.   On Tuesday we wrapped up some lingering sod projects around the course.  We still have many areas around the course that we would like to sod and will most likely finish up next week.   Also this week we were able to get another fertilizer application out on all sodded areas - new and old.  We know that some of the areas are still not growing and filling in but we have high hopes that these areas will continue to improve during the spring.  The team will continue to work on these areas to promote growth and density.   We completed our third and last application for Poa seed-head control.  Even with the crazy weather we've had we feel that we timed the application
