Week of March 30th
Last days of March and a new month started. The "Flip Flop" weather continued this week: frost and freezing temperatures last weekend, record highs, then back to more normal temperatures and above average temperatures for this weekend. It has been extremely difficult to lock in our spring programs and stay on a consistent schedule but our team continues to crush it with another busy and productive week.
This week we applied our second round of Poa seed-head control on greens and fairways. We are happy with the results so far but with the inconsistent weather patterns it's hard to say if our timing of the applications was correct.
Our tree contractor was out again this week removing all the dead wood out of the 3 Elms on hole 11. Removing the dead wood ensures safety while playing and we are currently working with the Greens Committee on planning the replacement of these trees.
The big project for the week was sodding winter project areas, bunker faces and high traffic areas. We received the sod Tuesday morning and the team laid 20 pallets of sod before lunch.
Also this week the team cut down all the native areas in preparation for our first round of post- and pre-emergent herbicides going out next week.
It is crazy to think with all the snow and rain we are still in a moderate drought. With the windy conditions this week we had to check some of the greens features for adequate moisture. Shown here is Tim Steindl (our new Assistant Superintendent) watering the 15th green. Tim comes to us from Greenspring Valley where he was the Assistant in Training. Tim brings an impressive work ethic and a broad knowledge of turfgrass and the game of golf. We are excited to have him join our team.
Lastly, for the remainder of the week the team will be focused on detail work and getting the course ready for a great weekend of golf.
Thanks for reading.
